CHALLENGE

North Carolina Session Law 2026-41 (the 2026 Appropriations Act, gives North Carolina parents and district residents new opportunities to challenge obscene, age-inappropriate materials in school libraries and classrooms, and instructional materials that do not align with the Standard Course of Study.

Join parents across the country in taking a closer look at these books and materials available to our children in public schools. Through this initiative, the Pavement Education Project will help identify, review, and document inappropriate materials within the North Carolina district schools. Under TAKE BACK THE CLASSROOM, a Karen England initiative, a book will be selected, a challenge kit provided, and along with our additional North Carolina resources that will make your challenge successful. ​​

Parents across the country and our state taking action in their own communities, at the same time, with the same resources and the same goal. ​

This membership is for genuine participants in the PEP Challenge. Member resources and communications are for participants only and shouldn't be shared publicly without permission, to protect coordinated efforts from bad-faith interference. Members are still free to share their own views — just not internal materials from either TBTC or PEP.


The Pavement Education Project is composed of non-partisan volunteers who are concerned with the well being of children and the rights of parents and guardians. The PEP mission is to inform, engage, and mobilize parents and communities for positive change in education. Join our team to get involved.

The Pavement Education Project is a non-profit, non-partisan 501 (c)(4) organization. Any donations will go towards projects that support educating and engaging North Carolina communities and families. Contributions are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. 

PEP is not a book banning effort, but offers parents and citizens an opportunity to see what books are available in NC Schools. It is up to parents and communities to take action.v
