Our Social Studies Units
At the Pavement Education Project, we love America, and we want to pass that love on to the kids and teens in our state. Our LAP team creates lessons and activities that walk students through our nation's story—the hard parts, the honest history, and the hopeful future we still believe in.
Our ready-to-teach units for grades 5–6+ combine historical background with engaging, hands-on learning. Our units includes teacher background information, NC goals and objectives, student activities, vocabulary, timelines, maps, and a whole-class Readers Theater script that puts students into the story and gives every student a role to play. Assessment options are also included.
Our goal is simple: help students learn our history, understand the ideas that shaped our nation, and develop an appreciation for the people and principles that have made America what it is today.

Liberty’s Heroes: Washington & Lincoln
A Presidents’ Day Unit — Students explore the lives, leadership, and challenges of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln through the Readers Theater “Foundations and Freedoms.”
America’s Rulebook: The Constitution and Its Roots
A Constitution Unit for Grades 5–6 — Students explore the origins of the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation, and the principles that shaped our system of government through Readers Theater, vocabulary activities, and “Detective Missions.”
Remembering Our Homegrown Heroes
A Memorial Day Unit for Grades 5–6+ — Students learn about North Carolina-connected heroes who gave their lives in service to our country through a multi-act Readers Theater and activities connecting North Carolina history, American history, and the meaning of Memorial Day.

Bring the Constitutional Convention to life! Designed for 5th through 6th grade, and higher. America’s Rulebook gives teachers a ready-to-use unit that helps students understand why our Constitution was created—not just what it says.
Students begin by exploring the Articles of Confederation and the problems that led to the Constitutional Convention. They then learn the key concepts and vocabulary needed to understand the debates of 1787 before stepping into the roles of delegates in an engaging whole-class Readers Theater. Follow-up Detective Missions challenge students to investigate what they have learned and apply their new knowledge.
The unit includes teacher background information, student activities, vocabulary, the complete Readers Theater script, and follow-up activities, providing the resources teachers need to guide students through this important period in American history.

Remembering Our Homegrown Heroes: A Memorial Day Unit
Make Memorial Day meaningful for your students with Remembering Our Homegrown Heroes, a ready-to-teach social studies unit for grades 5–6+ that connects Memorial Day to the lives and sacrifices of American heroes with ties to North Carolina.
The centerpiece is a multi-act, whole-class Readers Theater featuring men and women who were born in North Carolina or served at military installations and commands in the state. Their stories help students connect American history and military service to the place they call home.
Students learn about the lives, service, and sacrifices of these heroes while exploring why our nation observes Memorial Day and the importance of honoring those who gave their lives in service to our country.

A Presidents’ Day Unit
Bring Presidents’ Day to life with Liberty’s Heroes: Washington & Lincoln, a ready-to-teach social studies unit for grades 5–7+ that introduces students to two presidents who shaped pivotal moments in American history.
The centerpiece is “Foundations and Freedoms,” an engaging whole-class Readers Theater set between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. With a large cast—including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Lady Liberty, and other historical figures—students step into the story to explore the challenges, decisions, and contributions of these two presidents.
